BMW X5 AND X6 WINTER WHEELS AND TYRES

Customer calls: Hello please can I have a price on four Pirelli run-flat winter tyres, size 275/40R20 front and 315/35R20 rear. (This is a classic BMW X5 and X6 combination)…

Many customers give us a call asking the above question; we are all about advice and love the one on one conversation with the customer, always offering the best package we believe to be suited to them. My first response to this question would be have you considered changing your wheels to a smaller size, to which the customer will respond I don’t really want to spend that much on wheels and tyres just for winter.

Therefore, through the process we go.

1st the price on the requested sizes,

275/40R20 PIRELLI SCORPION ICE & SNOW 106V XL R/F £317.00

315/35R20 PIRELLI SCORPION ICE & SNOW 110V XL R/F £373.00

Total price delivered £1380 or fitted at one of our fitting centres across the UK £1450

2nd the cheaper and more affective option.

Recommend dropping down to 19” wheels and tyres option and removing the run-flat tyres, sounds strange I understand however, this should become clearer in a line or two.

19” wheels specially designed for use on the BMW X5 & X6 why so special you ask, when you remove the 315/35R20 from the rear and were to fit a normal 19” or even a 20” it would look sunken under the large wheel arches this is due to the width of the wheel and the offset. What we use is a narrower option both wheels are 9” x 19” offset front ET48 & offset rear ET18. BMW would use this same fitment on the X6 models Xdrive 30d & Xdrive 35i with there 19” option and it looks great. The tyres size for the X6 & X5 would become 255/50R19 again same spec as BMW. This option is 100% better then the wider 315 tyre size for cutting through the snow and slush. The best part of this is the price.

4 X 19” Alloy wheels fitted with 255/50R19 Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme

1 x Continental Compressor kit (all in one compressor and repair kit)

Delivered to your door £1198

Fitted at one of our fitting centres across the UK £1238

Total saving £252 when you buy wheels and tyres over the expensive run-flats

The continental Kit is there so there is no need for run-flats this option many customers take.

Hankook W310

Hankook W310 i-cept evo

hankook-i-cept-evo-w310Another winter tyre with a strange name, but what’s it like? Lets start with the basics.

Sizes available: 15″, 16″, 17″ & 18″, click here to see a full range.

Speed ratings: T (118mph), H (136mph) & V (149mph)

So why put these on your car, surely you only put winter tyres on big 4X4’s? No, everyone can benefit from winter tyres, and Hankook have realised that and produced the W310 in lots of sizes.

The range will fit smaller family cars, great for the ‘hot hatch’ and then to medium sized saloons and tourers, such as the BMW 3 Series

Hankook are one of few suppliers that makes the split 18″ sizes 225/40R18 & 255/35R18, appealing yet further to more vehicles.

Is this the first time you’ve heard of Hankook? Or you may well have seen them supporting football on TV, well, they are a great manufacturer that now make tyres that are fitted on new vehicles in the factory for BMW, Ford, Audi and many more.

They class themselves as a premium manufacturer but we use them as a mid-range option as they tend to be cheaper than the more familiar brands out there.

So, What are the advantages of the W310:
1. It comes in a vast range of sizes, including some unusual ones that no one else makes a winter tyre in
2. The tread design and pattern looks and feels like a summer tyre, which is particularly unusual in smaller sizes such as 15″ and 16″ diameter. This type of design is quieter so if road noise is an issue this tyre should be considered
3. Price – as we said, they are pitched a bit cheaper than the well known brands, but winter performance is still very good.

Feedback on these is really good, we have a number of repeat customers up in the Highlands who swear by them, and if they perform well in the Highlands, then we may just have a very good tyre on our hands!

We also spoke with a taxi driver who used them on a Mondeo in Lincolnshire and got in excess of 20,000 miles from a set – more than his summer tyres!

In terms of tyre tests there isn’t that much data out there, on the odd occasion that Hankook have put them forward they achieved mid-table results. The W310 is described as displaying great handling on snow and short braking distances on dry roads.

So let’s be honest, it’s not a premium tyre, and that’s reflected in the price, but it is good, performs well in the snow and because of it’s good dry performance and standard pattern is well suited to UK winter conditions. Add to this that it will last well, is nice and quiet and it’s reasonably priced, then the W310 i-cept evo seems like a good bet.
